Psychotherapy & Counselling Chepstow & Caldicot
Therapy can be beneficial to people in all walks of life for personal or professional reasons. It could be appropriate for problems such as life crises, habit control, relieving stress and anxiety and also as an important aid towards self-growth and in releasing hidden potential.
Therapy has been shown to beneficial in:
- Increasing confidence.
- Strengthening the mind.
- Releasing some of the enormous reserves of energy existing in the subconscious mind.
Once therapy is completed with the therapist, a person should have been taught to be his or her own therapist.
Psychotherapy or Counselling?
There is little difference between psychotherapy and counselling. They both involve listening and then discussing possible ways of dealing with the problem. You are encouraged to come up with your own ideas and the psychotherapeutic counsellor is there to help that happen. This is sometimes called solution focused therapy. There are a number of techniques in therapy which are growing in popularity because of their effectiveness. These include: Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).
Neuro Linguistic Programming
NLP is a more directive technique and follows procedures to help you to come to solutions. This could be to help change behavior, feelings and thoughts which you do not find helpful. But it is still encouraged that the solutions come from your mind.
CBT, NLP and Hypnosis
CBT and NLP are closely related. Although it is not necessary to use hypnosis to do CBT or NLP, hypnosis can be used as a powerful tool to increase the effectiveness of both methods.
Emotional Freedom Technique
Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) can provide relief from an array of emotional and physical states; it can also support maintenance and balance of health. Regular tapping with EFT can have accumulative benefits including clarity of thought and a positive outlook.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
CBT is used to explore feelings, thoughts, beliefs and even deeper levels of experience from childhood which often lead to ways of behaving and thinking that the person thinks they cannot control. Of course, this is a belief rather than a fact and it is the job of CBT to make the person aware of this.
Both NLP and CBT involve “homework” in which the person is encouraged to keep a record of thoughts, feelings and behavior in order to work on problems with the therapist. This is considered an important way to deal with problems as it gets the person to be more precisely aware of how their thoughts, feeling and behavior may not be effective in the way they approach their problems. A record is then kept of the more effective ways of using thoughts, feelings and behavior to tackle problems.
