Depression is the most common mental problem. There is a one in ten chance of a man developing major depression and a one on four chance that a woman will.
Although external influences are important in whether a person becomes depressed it is also true that different people respond in different ways to the same event whether it is divorce, death of a loved one, loss of a job. Some people would be sad, anxious or would fight back while others do become depressed. This follows a pattern of “learned helplessness”. The person feels they have no control over how they react to what happens and they give up. For a while this may even be helpful as it can keep the person shut down so that they are not trying to resolve what happened too quickly and they are not trying ineffectively to deal with the problem. However, long term depression has no function as the person is then assuming they can do nothing for the rest of their lives!
So one of the major features of depression is faulty thinking which is not based on reality. Whatever the cause of depression it is bound to persist longer with faulty thinking and dealing with negative thinking is a major part of the therapeutic approach.
If you are depressed you may be having negative thoughts about:
- Your Life
- Your Future
For example, the depressed person often thinks they have no future, that there is nothing worthwhile in their future, or in their life, and that they are inferior and worthless. No wonder they are depressed!
Depressed people tend to be good people
This is because depression does show sensitivity but at the same time the problem is that the focus of attention is inward not outward and therefore it is based on internal feelings not on outward reality and the help that others may be trying to give. It is important to remember too that the subconscious mind and the conscious mind to a lesser extent do not distinguish between imagination and reality. This means that what we imagine feels just as real as what happens in reality.
How does hypnosis work for depression?
With hypnotherapy the suggestions are put into your mind so that you may be better prepared to tolerate ambiguity and uncertainty. It is suggested that the subconscious mind is highly creative so that any problem can be put into perspective and can be seen as open to solutions not as problems which overcome you.
Do not look long and regretfully at the door which has closed because then you will not notice all the other doors which are opening up for you.
How can hypnotherapy help with depression?
Since depression is recognized as the number one mental problem then it is important to have the right approach. Hypnotherapy for depression works on the power of suggestion and could be effective in enabling you to do many things.
- Think in a more effective and realistic way.
- Energize you as depression saps energy so it makes it difficult to do anything at all.
- Motivate you to be more active
- Break the vicious circle that develops from depressive thinking.
